There is nothing like a dreary damp day to dredge up all of those down feelings and when there have been a few days in a row it can really impact on your performance and state of mind. We have just had some beautiful, much needed rain over the last 4 days but its getting to the stage where I am missing my sunshine and have noticed not just my own mood being a little on the low side but also that of my family and partner. So I decided to shake things up a bit and this is what we have done to help shift those sads to smiles :)
Move your body!
Have a wet weather plan, if you usually walk or run outside and its too wet – what is your back up? My solution was to walk in the rain today and yesterday we got out with the kids and played in the mud – yes it was wet, messy and by the end quite cold but we all came in with a smile on our faces! Perhaps its doing a yoga class online, stretch your body or some other thing that you enjoy – it doesn’t have to be huge even a minutes worth of star jumps or running on the spot will help give you a lift. Have a plan to replace your usual exercise if its impacted by the rain and if you don’t usually exercise incorporate a little when it is a bit dreary.
Deficiency in Vit D is a big one – we come from a very sunny place which means we are quite SunSmart which is important but also means we may not be getting our daily dose of Vitamin D. Vitamin D is essential not only for mood but for all things immune system, gut health and overall health and vitality. The only way to truly know if you are deficient is to have a blood test, but if you are feeling down and you suspect you are not getting an adequate intake try taking some vitamin D3 or upping your intake of vitamin D rich foods and notice any changes. Other symptoms to look for are aching bones, head sweating, gut issues and deficiency is also more prevalent if you are overweight or over 50. There is a wealth of information out there seek some further advice and you could shift things quickly and easily with just a few tweaks in diet or a quality supplement.
If I feel like I have achieved something for the day, my mood improves exponentially, to keep on track when the days feel a little heavier and that sun isn’t shining make a list and break it down into bite sized chunks, set out to achieve at least 3 things on your list every day and you will be working your way towards your goals consistently. Crossing those three things off a list each day is also really satisfying! And who knows you might just find you are achieving much more than that?!
Attitude of Gratitude
The simple act of being grateful is a nice, easy thing to shift you out of a funk. My boys and I do our grateful list every day in the car on the way to school and I love what they come up with. It shifts everyone ‘s mood quickly and even if I have been a screaming banshee moments before rushing to get them in the car when my 4yo tells me he is grateful for his motorbike’s teeth, I cant help but giggle. Many people keep a gratitude journal daily, I like to keep it simple how you do it is up to you but do it and reap the benefits! Being grateful for the rain today helped me shift my dreary outlook – our rain tanks are now full and we have lots of yummy rainwater to sustain us. How does it get even better than that?
What are your tricks on a rainy day to shake off the sads? I would love to hear from you!
